What Types of Substance Addiction Does Rehab Treatment Cover?

Your coverage will be based on the plan that you have through Aetna, but you might be able to get them to cover at least part of the cost of your addiction treatment. SUD treatment can treat those with addictions to substances such as alcohol, opioids, marijuana, cocaine, heroin, crystal meth, and prescription drugs.

What Rehab Programs does Aetna New Jersey Cover?

Aetna Better Health New Jersey might cover several types of addiction treatment. Per the ACA, your Marketplace plan might cover the following types of substance use disorder treatment:

  • Medical detox: This is not always a required step in the treatment process, but medical detox can help you safely withdraw from a substance—and do so in as much comfort and safety as possible. This may ease the transition into your ongoing treatment program, which could include either inpatient or outpatient rehab.
  • Inpatient programs: Inpatient programs provide help within a secure residential setting, letting you live among others who are dealing with substance use disorders. Quite a few of these programs involve some combination of individual and group therapy in addition to engaging activities that further encourage recovery.
  • Outpatient programs: Outpatient programs allow you to remain living at home while you attend treatment at a rehab facility each day for a set number of hours.
  • Intensive outpatient programs (IOP): These outpatient programs require that you attend treatment programs for longer and more frequent sessions than you would in a standard outpatient program. Program sessions can last for few hours at a time and take place multiple days per week.
  • Partial hospitalization programs (PHP): PHPs are just as intensive as inpatient programs but allow you to live at home while you attend on a regular basis. You could end up going to treatment for 5 or more days per week with daily sessions that might last from 4 to 6 hours.
  • Aftercare: Aftercare programs support sustained sobriety after more intensive rehab. There are many types of aftercare, including support groups, therapy, and community programs.

Does Aetna in NJ Cover Mental Health and Dual Diagnosis Treatment?

Aetna New Jersey can cover some, if not all, of your mental health and dual diagnosis treatment, as is mandated by the ACA. Research shows that getting help for mental, behavioral, and emotional health at the same time as a SUD is crucial for achieving a successful recovery. Mental health and substance use conditions are certainly serious in nature but can be treated.7

Serious mental illnesses (which can be defined as someone over the age of 18 having—within the past year—a diagnosable emotional, behavioral, or mental disorder that impairs their functionality to the point where it interferes with everyday life) and SUDs often correlate.7

Some of the most commonly diagnosed comorbidities that occur alongside SUDs include:

Simply put, a dual diagnosis means that a SUD and serious mental illness are occurring at the same time. Rehab facilities and outpatient therapy can treat dual diagnoses. However, when these conditions are serious in nature, inpatient rehab can be much more effective. Dual diagnosis treatment aims to create a more sustained sobriety by using various types of therapy.
