What Is UMR?
UMR is a third-party administrator of various health insurance plans and systems. As a result, it does not directly provide insurance coverage but instead helps insurance companies and their clients through the claims process.
UMR is a third-party administrator of various health insurance plans and systems. As a result, it does not directly provide insurance coverage but instead helps insurance companies and their clients through the claims process.
UMR isn’t an insurance company, meaning drug and alcohol rehab isn’t technically covered through the company. However, there are over 3,000 healthcare providers within the UMR third-party network. UMR specializes in working with providers to expand mental health opportunities for clients, including rehab for substance misuse. UMR recognizes the effectiveness of rehab and encourages providers to offer fair coverage.
For more information on getting rehab coverage, call your insurance provider. The amount of coverage you have can vary widely based on where you live, whether the facility is in or out-of-network, the length of your stay, and your insurance plan level.
UMR recognizes that both inpatient and outpatient treatment options are viable under different circumstances. Outpatient care is often harder to find coverage for in certain situations, but that applies to all insurance companies, not simply those under the UMR third-party system.
Residential care is generally preferred to outpatient care for drug and alcohol addiction. As of 2010, the CDC reports over 31,000 residential care facilities were in operation.
Many of those facilities are covered by the 3,000 insurance companies belonging to the UMR network, so you stand a great chance of finding a treatment center that will accept your UMR-affiliated insurance plan.
Many insurance plans may provide some degree of coverage for the medically necessary treatment of mental and behavioral health disorders. As a result, you may encounter UMR during the claims process with your insurance company. Some common types of mental health disorders that may be covered include:
During addiction treatment, there may be various types of medical, behavioral, and pharmacological therapies used to help treat substance use and mental health disorders. Some common therapy types include:
UMR health insurance companies aren’t required to provide a set length of treatment. UMR recognizes the duration of private treatment is confidential and depends largely on the individual’s condition. Common lengths of addiction treatment include 30-day rehab programs, 60-day rehab programs, and 90-day rehab programs.
UMR is discreet in such matters but encourages insurance companies to work with customers and doctors to determine an appropriate treatment length. UMR also recognizes the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008, which expanded the mental health services insurance providers are required to offer customers.
The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008, which is recognized by UMR and all UMR providers, also includes special treatment for drug and alcohol addiction.
UMR doesn’t offer treatment directly, but rather through its more than 3,000 providers nationwide. Coverage depends on the individual provider. Executive rehab facilities that offer luxury services and amenities are less likely to be eligible for full coverage. UMR itself does not provide exclusive rules to its providers, but rather general guidelines to facilitate the provision of mental health insurance to all patients of its member insurance companies.
Although insurance companies that belong to the UMR network are known for providing a variety of mental health coverage options for their customers, not all treatment plans are fully covered. If you are struggling to cover the costs of copayments or other out-of-pocket expenses, there are several rehab payment options to consider to help you pay the cost of treatment. Some popular payment alternatives instead of using health insurance to pay for rehab include:
