What Is Florida Blue?

Florida Blue is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) and has been providing health insurance to Floridians for over 80 years.1 Florida Blue is the largest health insurer in the state and serves over 6 million members.1 The company’s mission is to help communities and people in Florida achieve better health. To do so, Florida Blue offers a wide range of coverage choices including business, independent, and Medicare plans.

Does Florida Blue Cover Rehab Treatment?

Yes, as a Florida Blue member, the cost of drug and alcohol treatment (e.g., medical detox, inpatient rehab, and outpatient rehab), should be at least partially covered by your insurance plan.2 Thanks to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), all health insurance providers must provide coverage for substance use disorder treatment.3

Exactly how much of the treatment cost is covered depends on the specific Florida Blue plan you have. The cost of addiction treatment can vary widely depending on several factors, including the type of treatment you need, the rehab facility you choose, and how long you attend rehab.

To learn more about addiction treatment and Florida Blue coverage, you can call the number on the back of your insurance card to speak with a Florida Blue representative, who can walk you through the details of your plan and addiction treatment coverage.

Types of Addiction Treatment That Florida Blue May Cover

Rehab can help treat addiction to alcohol, illicit drugs like cocaine and heroin, prescription drugs, and more. But addiction treatment isn’t “one size fits all.” There are several types of addiction treatment in Florida available. Your continuum of care will depend on several factors, including what substances you’re using, how long you’ve been using them, and if you have a co-occurring mental health disorder like anxiety or depression.

Florida Blue may provide coverage for several types of addiction treatment, including:4, 5

  • Medical detox: Medical detox can help patients more comfortably and safely withdraw from certain substances, such as alcohol or benzodiazepines. This is often the first step in addiction treatment and can help patients transition to ongoing addiction treatment, such as inpatient or outpatient rehab.
  • Inpatient rehab: Inpatient rehab provides addiction treatment in a safe and supportive residential setting. While living at an inpatient rehab facility, patients have access to caring and knowledgeable staff 24/7.
  • Outpatient rehab: Outpatient rehab options vary and allow patients to live at home while attending rehab during set hours. This flexibility can give some patients the opportunity to maintain certain responsibilities, such as school or work.
  • Intensive outpatient program (IOP): An IOP allows patients to live at home while attending treatment several days a week, typically for 3 to 4 hours at a time.
  • Partial hospitalization program (PHP): PHPs are similarly structured to inpatient rehab programs, but patients live at home while attending treatment. Most PHP programs involve attending treatment 5 days a week for 4-6 hours each day.
  • Aftercare: Aftercare programs provide ongoing support to patients who have completed an inpatient or outpatient program. Aftercare can help provide the support needed to ensure ongoing recovery and prevent relapse.

The exact amount of insurance coverage for these treatments can vary, depending on the type of Florida Blue plan you have. You may be responsible for paying some out-of-pocket costs for treatment, such as copays and deductibles. Speaking with a Florida Blue representative ahead of time can help ensure you know exactly what you will be responsible for paying.

Does Florida Blue Cover Mental Health & Dual Diagnosis Treatment?

Yes. In addition to substance use disorder treatment, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires that health insurance providers provide coverage for behavioral health treatment (e.g., counseling and psychotherapy) and behavioral and mental health inpatient services in some capacity. This means that Florida Blue will cover some, if not all, of the cost of mental health and dual diagnosis treatments that members access.5

Statistics show that approximately 50% of all individuals who struggle with substance use disorder also live with a co-occurring mental health disorder, such as anxiety or depression.6 When a person has substance use disorder and a co-occurring mental health disorder, this is referred to as a “dual diagnosis.”

Many rehab facilities offer an integrated approach to treating addiction and mental health disorders concurrently. Treating both conditions may help prevent relapse and give a person the skills and tools to support their recovery now and in the future.

Florida Blue provides coverage for members who wish to access treatment for mental health, including substance use disorder.7 Mental health benefits are integrated into all Florida Blue medical plans to provide care for all members.7 As a Florida Blue member, you can access mental health and addiction treatment knowing that at least part of your treatment costs will be covered by your insurance plan.
