The geography of New Mexico showcases its breathtaking beauty, featuring vast deserts, towering mountains, and picturesque mesas. This diverse landscape provides a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, with opportunities for hiking, skiing, and exploring ancient ruins.

The state’s rich Native American heritage is intricately woven into its cultural fabric, celebrated through art, cuisine, and traditional ceremonies. Moreover, New Mexico’s creative spirit thrives in its bustling art scene, with world-renowned galleries and a deep appreciation for traditional and contemporary artistic expressions.

Addiction in New Mexico

Addiction is a pervasive issue in New Mexico, impacting individuals and communities across the state. According to the New Mexico Legislative Finance Committee, New Mexico has one of the highest rates of substance misuse in the country. From 2001 to the present, the combined rates of alcohol and drug-related deaths have increased 60 percent.2 In 2018 alone, a staggering 2,081 individuals in New Mexico lost their lives due to alcohol or drug addiction, marking the highest recorded number of such deaths in the state’s history. The cumulative death toll between 1990 and 2018 exceeded 38,000, with substance abuse accounting for 11 percent of all deaths by 2018.2

In the period spanning 2017 to 2019, New Mexico faced an average annual prevalence of 7.3% (equivalent to approximately 128,000 individuals) with past-year substance use disorder.3 Sadly, the issue has continued to persist in more recent times as well. In 2021, the state witnessed the tragic loss of 1,052 lives due to drug or alcohol overdoses.4

Addiction Treatment in New Mexico

In New Mexico, individuals seeking addiction treatment have access to multiple levels of care tailored to their specific needs. These levels of addiction treatment include detoxification (detox), inpatient treatment, and outpatient treatment.

  • Detox: Detoxification is typically the first step in addiction treatment. It focuses on safely managing withdrawal symptoms as the body eliminates drugs or alcohol. Medical professionals provide monitoring and support to ensure a safe and comfortable detoxification process.
  • Inpatient Treatment: Inpatient treatment involves residing at a treatment facility for a specified duration, typically ranging from a few weeks to several months. This level of care provides a structured environment with 24/7 support, therapy sessions, group counseling, and a range of specialized treatments such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and trauma-focused therapy.
  • Outpatient Treatment: Outpatient treatment allows individuals to live at home while attending scheduled treatment sessions. This option provides flexibility for those who have responsibilities such as work or family obligations. Outpatient programs vary in intensity and may include individual therapy, group counseling, educational sessions, and ongoing support.

Within these levels of care, different therapies and specialized treatment programs are offered to address specific needs. These may include holistic approaches, dual diagnosis treatment, experiential therapies, and family therapy to involve loved ones in the recovery process.

Furthermore, individuals seeking addiction treatment in New Mexico have the option to choose from luxury rehabs and private rehabs. Luxury rehabs offer upscale accommodations and amenities, creating a comfortable and serene environment for recovery. Private rehabs are funded through self-pay or private insurance and provide quality, individualized treatment.

To explore local rehab options, individuals can utilize online tools, such as the “Find a Rehab Center” tool, which can help locate nearby treatment facilities based on location, specific needs, and preferences.

How Much Does Rehab Cost?

Most insurance plans are required to provide some coverage for addiction treatment, which may include detoxification, inpatient or outpatient treatment, therapy sessions, and medications. To use insurance, individuals should contact their insurance provider to understand the specifics of their plan. It is important to inquire about the extent of coverage, including any copayments, deductibles, or limitations. By contacting their insurance provider, individuals can gain clarity on the financial aspects of their treatment and make informed decisions.

For those who are uninsured, there is still an option to access treatment through state-funded treatment centers. State-funded treatment centers receive support from government funding and offer affordable or no-cost treatment options for individuals who lack insurance coverage. These centers aim to provide accessible care to those in need and typically offer a range of services, including detoxification, counseling, and therapy.

Length of Stay in Rehab

When considering addiction treatment in New Mexico, individuals have a range of options regarding the duration of their stay. The most common durations include 30 days, 60 days, and 90 days, each offering different benefits depending on the individual’s needs and the severity of their addiction.

In addition to these options, there is long-term rehab, which typically lasts between 6 months to 2 years, depending on individual treatment needs and the specific facility or program enrolled in. Long-term rehab provides an extended and intensive treatment experience, often involving a residential setting. This option is suitable for individuals who may require more intensive support, have multiple relapse episodes, or struggle with co-occurring mental health disorders.

Recovery Starts Today

In the journey towards recovery from addiction, finding the right treatment that aligns with your unique needs is of utmost importance. By seeking out addiction treatment that is tailored to your specific circumstances, you increase your chances of achieving lifelong recovery. Whether it’s considering different levels of care, therapy modalities, duration of treatment, or exploring insurance coverage or state-funded options, the key is to make informed decisions that prioritize your well-being. By taking the time to find the treatment approach that resonates with you, you can embark on a transformative path towards lasting recovery and a brighter future.
