
People who live in St. Petersburg, Florida are not exempt from the nation’s ever-growing struggles with drug and alcohol abuse.
Nearly one-fourth (24.1%) of Pinellas County residents reported using an opioid painkiller in 2016. Additionally, about 10% of residents reported misusing or abusing an opioid painkiller, such as taking more than prescribed or taking it without a prescription.1 Misusing and abusing prescription painkillers increases a person’s risk of developing an addiction, which is characterized by compulsive drug use regardless of the negative impact it has on an individual’s life.
