Destiny’s Child Star Arrested for Alcohol Disturbance
Farrah Franklin, a former member of Destiny’s Child, was arrested in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on Sunday morning. Members of the local sheriff’s department took the singer into custody and charged her with disorderly conduct. According to responding officers, Franklin was “highly intoxicated.”
Details of the Incident
Franklin was invited to Myrtle Beach by Da’Quan Bowers, a football player for the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Bowers and Franklin, along with another NFL player, Ricky Sapp, hit the local clubs and partied into the night. Franklin was reportedly drinking heavily, growing increasingly loud and out of control. Not wanting to cause a scene, Bowers and Sapp decided it was time to leave the bar. The trio then made their way back to Sapp’s rental property.
Both Bowers and Sapp suspected that Franklin was secretly doing drugs throughout the night. Bowers told police that he became suspicious of the singer after she began making frequent (and extended) trips to the bathroom. With each subsequent trip, Franklin became more and more intoxicated.
She reportedly began breaking things, screaming at the top of her lungs, and slamming doors.
Once the group made it to Sapp’s house, both men say Franklin “went nuts.” She reportedly began breaking things, screaming at the top of her lungs, and slamming doors. After a brief period of this behavior, Sapp called the police. When Franklin realized she was in danger of being arrested, she fled the house on foot.
At this point, things got really weird. When members of the Horry County Sheriff’s Department arrived on scene and realized Franklin was roaming the streets, they conducted a thorough search of the neighborhood. After about an hour, Franklin was found hiding in a neighbor’s yard.
Officers say the singer was dangerously drunk and unable to walk without assistance. She denied any drug use and attempted to convince police that she didn’t do anything wrong, insisting that she “was just fine.” She went on to say that she didn’t have anywhere to go, so she planned to head for the woods and sleep there until morning.
Franklin was released on Sunday afternoon after paying bond.
A Dangerous Pattern
People have long speculated that Franklin’s alcohol abuse problems caused her to be kicked out of Destiny’s Child.
After leaving Destiny’s Child in early 2000, Franklin has been struggling to find steady work. She has appeared in a few independent films and is reportedly working on a debut album. Unfortunately, this latest run-in with authorities doesn’t bode well for her reputation.
Back in 2011, Franklin was arrested in Culver City, California. She was taken into custody on April 23 at approximately 6:45 a.m. and charged with disorderly conduct. Arresting officers confirmed that alcohol was a factor.
What’s more, people have long speculated that Franklin’s alcohol abuse problems caused her to be kicked out of Destiny’s Child. In late 2000, shortly after Franklin’s exit, Beyonce told MTV that letting her go was a group decision that came after she missed multiple promotional events.
