Early last year my stepson went to Choices Recovery. When he first went there I wasn’t sure whether he had an honest desire to get sober or if he was just going so he could be able to tell his dad that he tried getting clean the next time he asked his dad for money. My relationship with my stepson has always been incredibly strained. He started using drugs long before I met and married his dad. However, when his dad and I got married he started blaming me for everything. When his dad stopped giving his money, it was my fault. When he got kicked out, it was my fault. In his opinion, everything that didn’t go his way was my fault and he accused me of trying to pit his dad against him pretty often. That wasn’t the case obviously and besides helping his dad find treatment centers that he could go to I pretty much stayed out of it. His strained relationship with his dad was his own doing but he refused to see it. That changed when he went to Choices. Doing his program there help him tremendously. He started taking responsibility for his own actions and owning up to all the things that he had done or said while he was high or looking for money for drugs. When he completed his program at Choices he came home and has been staying at the house with his dad and I. He just hit his 1 year sober mark and I couldn’t be happier for him. He’s working now and going to school at night. His relationship with his dad is better than I’ve ever seen and him and I are getting along for the first time. I finally have the ability to get to know my stepson and as it turns out he’s a pretty sweet guy. It’s taken this last year but we are finally starting to be a real family and I’m so happy for that. He’s going to do some great things with his life and going to Choices gave him the opportunity to get his life back on track.
It was mainly better for kids not so much for adults. There were great people.
