The most beneficial for me has been that because I was able to get off heroin while I was here in treatment, I have been able to experience what it's like to be sober for the first time in over ten years. When I was using drugs I slowly lost myself and who I was. It happened very slowly at first so I wasn't able to notice it as much as the people around me could. I was told that I had lost my personality and that I was basically an empty shell. I would get very defensive because I couldn't see what they were seeing.
