Islamic Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers
Addiction doesn’t discriminate and individuals of all faiths can struggle with substance misuse and addiction. Substance misuse and addiction are often stigmatized, particularly for individuals who identify as Muslim. If you identify as Muslim and are struggling with substance misuse or addiction, an Islamic rehab center may help you overcome your alcohol or drug use issues. By combining evidence-based treatment and faith, faith-based rehabs can provide Muslims with the resources they need to achieve and maintain recovery.
What Is an Islamic Faith-Based Addiction Rehab?
Islamic faith-based rehab centers approach alcohol and drug addiction from a spiritual perspective and may combine evidence-based treatment with the beliefs and values of Islam. In an Islamic rehab program, you may find that treatment includes:1
- Incorporating Allah and Islamic beliefs into treatment.
- Counselors and therapists who identify with the individual in treatment, e.g., a male counselor for a male in treatment.
- Integrating family counseling when possible
- Assisting the individual in creating goals associated with the Islamic-based afterlife.
- Allowing time for daily prayers and other Islamic customs.
- Relapse prevention techniques that align with Islamic teachings.
- An emphasis that substance use disorder is not an unforgivable sin.
Traditional programs may emphasize medication and psychosocial treatment.1 For Muslims struggling with a drug addiction or alcohol addiction, faith-based treatment may be more aligned with their current beliefs and values, making it easier to move forward in recovery.
Benefits of an Islamic Faith-Based Drug and Alcohol Rehab Program
Islamic faith-based rehab may enhance an individual’s recovery process by incorporating Islamic faith perspectives.2  There are approximately 130,000 faith-based substance use recovery programs in the United States and 84% of research shows that faith is a positive factor in addiction recovery and can prevent the risk of relapse.3
Some mosques now provide addiction treatment with a focus on recovery and religion. In one study, individuals with addiction to opioids received treatment in a mosque, where methadone maintenance (medical detox and recovery) was paired with religious and peer counseling.4 The study found that mosques are a viable alternative approach for managing addiction in the Muslim population, and encourages more mosques to implement community-oriented treatment programs.4
Islamic Addiction Treatment Therapies
Islamic rehab centers may combine several support groups and therapies that are aligned with evidence-based treatment and Islamic principles and teachings, including:
- Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).
- Medication-assisted treatment (MAT).
- Motivational interviewing.
- Evaluation for and treatment of co-occurring disorders.
- Family support and therapy.
- Group therapy.
- Alternative therapies.
- Recovery groups.
Dual Diagnosis Treatment in Islamic Drug Rehab
Addiction and mental health are often connected. Some Muslims who struggle with drug or alcohol addiction may also have a mental health disorder, such as anxiety or depression. When this occurs, it is referred to as a co-occurring disorder or comorbidity.5 Nearly half of people who experience a mental illness also experience substance use disorder at some point in their lives.5
Dual diagnosis treatment means treating both conditions at the same time. This type of treatment is offered by rehab centers that can help individuals overcome addiction and help with mental-health-related conditions, too.
Types of Islamic Addiction Rehab Programs
There are various types of Muslim addiction treatment programs, including detox, inpatient and outpatient rehab, and aftercare programs. Because patients are different, treatment should be individualized.
Muslim Alcohol & Drug Detox
For patients who are physiologically dependent on certain substances, such as alcohol or benzodiazepines, detox can be an important first step in their recovery journey. Some substances can produce uncomfortable and potentially life-threatening, symptoms that may require medical intervention. Professional detox services can help ease or mitigate these symptoms, address complications, and get patients through detoxification as comfortably and safely as possible.6
Islamic Inpatient Addiction Rehab
Inpatient programs provide 24/7 care from medical professionals in a home-like setting following detox, if detox is required.7
Islamic faith-based inpatient rehab centers offer Muslim individuals with addiction a safe place to live while getting sober and beginning the journey to recovery. These rehab centers provide individualized care to Muslims with a focus on spirituality and adhering to the principles and practices of Islam.
Inpatient rehabs vary in terms of what treatments they offer and how long they offer them. An inpatient facility with a faith-based component may approach treatment through an Islamic lens, offering spiritual support.
Outpatient Addiction Rehab Programs
Outpatient rehab programs do not require patients to live at the facility for the duration of their treatment. Patients may go to treatment during the day and return home or to a sober living facility in the evening. Sober living facilities provide safe housing and supportive, structured living conditions for patients who are in rehab. There are a few types of outpatient programs, with varying levels of care, including:7
- Standard outpatient programs: These programs involve attending treatment sessions 1-2 times per week for 1-2 hours.
- Intensive outpatient programs (IOPs): These programs typically involve coming to the treatment center approximately 3 times per week, for 2-3 hours at a time. These are usually reserved for individuals who have completed inpatient treatment and need continued support.
- Partial hospitalization programs (PHPs): These programs are intensive, and involve attending treatment 5-7 days a week for several hours each time. This option may be best for someone who needs a stronger level of support but does not need medical invention.
A faith-based program will typically integrate the principles of Islam into most or all aspects of treatment, no matter which outpatient program you are enrolled in.
If you’re not sure where to start, speak with your healthcare provider to discuss which type of treatment would be best for you.
Islamic Addiction Rehab Charities vs. Private Rehab Facilities
Islamic rehab charities are often structured around faith-based techniques for recovery. These programs are typically funded through private donations. Private addiction rehab centers rely more on medication-assisted therapies and residential treatment programs combined with therapy that is secular-based.
Finding an Islamic Addiction Rehab Center
Finding an Islamic rehab center near you or out of state is not always an easy or quick decision. There are many factors to consider when choosing a rehab center, and spiritual activities can play an important role in recovery. Spiritual activities may be more beneficial when combined with evidence-based treatment such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). The best treatment center for you depends on several factors including your unique circumstances and needs and what level of treatment that rehab center offers.
Factors you may wish to consider when choosing a Muslim rehab center include things like:
- How much does it cost?
- Is it close to your home to facilitate family therapy, if applicable? You can search by location in our directory to find rehabs near me.
- Do you want a location that is not near your home? You may be more likely to find a rehab center that meets your needs if you are open to traveling out of state.
- Do you have mixed-gender program preferences?
- Do you want luxury facilities?
- What level of treatment do you need? (E.g., someone who uses substances to cope with anxiety may benefit from a program that also focuses on dual diagnosis or mental health).
- How does the treatment program incorporate spiritual principles?
- Are there spiritual leaders on staff at the rehab center?
Does My Insurance Cover Islamic Addiction Rehab?
Most rehab centers accept private insurance as a means to pay for treatment. Knowing what parts of treatment your insurance policy covers and what you may be responsible for paying out-of-pocket is important. In addition, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) lists alcohol and drug addiction services as 1 of 10 categories of essential health benefits, which means insurance sold on the Health Insurance Marketplace must cover treatment.8
You will need to verify your insurance to make sure the rehab is in-network. You can check your insurance online or call your provider.
