I spent 30 days at Great Oaks Recovery in March and April of 2016 for alcohol abuse. I am nearly 2 years sober and have not had any relapse. The tools and techniques I learned have helped me navigate through a couple of periods where I wanted to drink. I support the 12 step program and attend AA meetings weekly. However, for me the group classes learning about relapse, coping and behavioral therapy have been more helpful. The most helpful was my counselor, who helped me identify my triggers. When I get into thst complacent mood where I think I'm OK and can have a glass of wine or two, I stop myself and recall the conversations we had. When I get angry or jealous that I can't drink like a normal person, I just remember I have an illness and my body and mind can't process alcohol much like a diabetic can't process sugar. The staff at Great Oaks was wonderful. The facility is nice - very nice for a treatment facility. We had a few hiccups with hot water while I was there but they were sorting it out. The staff would also take us on outings such as AA and bowling. I appreciated the sit down meals with a couple of choices. The food was always fresh and snacks were always available. I would have liked a few healthier options but the menu allowed enough choice. They also stocked a few of my own items for me. Of course I would have loved a facility with rooms and meals like the Four Seasons but what they have is sufficient and I wasn't there for vacation! I also appreciated the smaller scale of the facility so we could get to know each other and get a sense of community and commitment to sobriety. I highly recommend Great Oaks Recovery!
My insurance would not cover outpatient services; however, they did assist me in finding a half-way house to move into immediately upon discharge. I did not relapse. I highly recommend this facility and have referred several individuals and clients to Starlite. Starlite provided a life change, life saving experience for me. A doctor is regularly available, nursing staff is on hand and supportive, support staff is compassionate and kind, but professional and concerned. The counselors are enthusiastic about their role and take the time to address issues individually as they arise. I was stubborn at times and was not eager to comply completely at first, but my counselor and staff worked with me through the difficulties in the beginning and guided me through big groups, small groups and individual sessions to a new way of thinking. A chapel is available for spiritual needs, a work out room is on site as well as walking/running trails and beach volleyball court. Mediation/Relaxation was offered and every Saturday the facility held an "open meeting" where the public was invited for guest speakers. Outpatient is offered for those able to enroll after treatment and counselors are also active in recovery in the community of nearby Kerrville which offers numerous recovery meetings and houses. Amazing Experience.
I have overall enjoyed my experience , the staff are knowledgeable caring, kind and hold you accountable getting to class, which is appreciated considering , I needed structure in my life. The one improvement I would hope for the facility, is the Med pass wait time and process, with that being said the nurses are just as caring and compassionate and are doing the best they can. I would like to personally highlight Todd,Bradley, Alex, and Mrs.G, for going above and beyond for me when I had a hard day or a great day, their attitudes and compassion were always the same. The Facility is very nice, roomy and cozy. The food is good as well, the kitchen never fails they have a great system and schedule in place. The classes and overall approach with therapy is great and I feel I am leaving here with more than I knew coming in.
