Specialization

  • Medical Detoxification

Drugs and alcohol have widespread effects throughout your body, including but not limited to the addiction and/or physical/psychological dependence that develops with substance abuse over time. Many organ systems are affected by addiction and will react to withdrawal. The term “medical detoxification” means that there is a trained and licensed medical professional onsite to monitor your vital signs and protect your physical and emotional health as your body goes through withdrawal.
  • Family Program

Research shows that the odds of successful, sustained recovery from addiction are far higher when family members and loved ones are involved in treatment. Drug and alcohol addiction often have genetic roots, whether related to substance abuse, mental illness or both. Family dynamics also play a role and, often, family members are the first to realize a loved one has developed an addiction. Also, it’s important for family members to understand and embrace the lifestyle changes that are required to sustain recovery.
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is a highly specific, research-validated form of therapy that can help people overcome trauma. With EMDR, a trained practitioner uses bilateral stimulation, eye movement and touch to stimulate parts of the brain as a patient recounts certain experiences and memories as a way to more thoroughly process uncomfortable, painful feelings.
  • Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)

Long-term taper options like Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) can increase success rates by reducing cravings, urges, and withdrawal symptoms. Managing these symptoms strengthens long-term recovery and prevents relapse, which can be lifesaving.

ABOUT DISCOVERY POINT RETREAT

Located outside the pastoral community of Waxahachie, 30 miles south of Dallas, Texas, Discovery Point Retreat is an upscale treatment facility offering a full continuum of programming for adults seeking treatment for chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders. The facility offers a residential treatment program, a partial hospitalization program (PHP), and an intensive outpatient program (IOP). The facility also provides on-site medical detox services, which only 36 (8.4 percent) residential facilities in Texas provide.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Upon admission, clients participate in an initial substance abuse and mental health assessment to help clinicians determine an appropriate level of care and individualized treatment plan. If necessary, clients may first undergo the facility's detoxification protocol. Discovery Point Retreat utilizes non-addictive medications to alleviate the discomfort of withdrawal. This Medication-assisted Treatment (MAT) program can make detox easier. In Texas, 11,701 (2.8 percent) clients participated in MAT programs in 2017. The supervised detox process typically lasts approximately seven days.

If a client requires a highly structured schedule and supervision to obtain and sustain initial sobriety, the client may be referred to the residential program. Discovery Point Retreat utilizes evidence-based modalities, namely cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), 12-step immersion, and recreational therapy to treat its clientele.

Through CBT approaches, clinicians help clients to increase mindfulness, identify patterned behavior, and modify irrational thinking. During residential treatment, clients participate in both group and individual counseling sessions to identify the links between destructive thinking and behavior. Clients are also introduced to the principles and practices of the 12-step program. Along with attending 12-step meetings, Discovery Point Retreat emphasizes surrendering to a Higher Power. Clients attend off-site chapel services, 12-step group sessions, and daily Bible study classes.

In addition to evidence-based approaches, Discovery Point Retreat facilitates a range of therapeutic recreational activities for its residents, which includes music, art, equine, and dance therapy sessions. Residents also have access to the nearby walking trails, a fishing pond, and a fully equipped gym, and clients also regularly enjoy off-site outings to Dallas for concerts, sporting events, and more.

Before completing the program, clinicians help clients form acomprehensive discharge plans, which may include encouraging the client to utilize one of the facility's outpatient programs as a "step-down" aftercare service and/or referrals to community-based resources.

Discovery Point Retreat's PHP caters to individuals with co-occurring disorders and a history of relapse. It is one of the 232 (53.8 percent) of facilities in Texas that offer mental health services as well as substance abuse treatment. Although programming is similar to residential care, clients reside off-site each night. The facility's IOP is less intensive and involves group and individual therapy, as well as regular drug testing.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Discovery Point Retreat's treatment services are provided by a team of masters level clinicians, which includes psychiatrists, licensed professional counselors, specialized recreational counselors, and case managers.
