About
Liz Karter is a therapist in addiction, specializing in gambling addiction and women, practicing since 2001. Liz is the author of the book Women and Problem Gambling and her second book Working with Women’s Groups for Problem Gambling: Treating Gambling Addiction Through Relationships will be published August 2014.
In January 2010 having worked with all leading U.K. problem gambling treatment agencies, and having successfully established the first U.K. groups for women with gambling addiction, Liz launched Level Ground, a private treatment service located in both London and Sussex. Level Ground provides addiction therapy to both men and women and specializes in meeting the individual needs of women with gambling addiction and offering low-cost women’s groups. Level Ground also provides a greater understanding of the psychology of addiction and its prevention via talks, training and workshops.
Liz is frequently consulted by the media regarding her specialization in women and gambling and has made numerous national and international TV and radio appearances, including Al Jazeera America, BBC Breakfast News, Sky News, ITV This Morning and Radio 4. She has also worked as a consultant to BBC and ITN on gambling addiction documentaries. Liz has given numerous national and international newspaper and magazine interviews, including The Daily Mail, The Observer, and The Independent on Sunday.
An experienced conference speaker, Liz has delivered papers for the National Lottery Commission, GamCare, The Society for the Studies of Gambling (SSG), European Association for the Study of Gambling (EASG), The Bowlby Memorial Conference, The Taylor & Francis Group and Gender Issues in Gambling Conference, Hohenheim University, Stuttgart.
Liz Karter is also a member of Community Action for Responsible Gambling (CARG) and is on the editorial board of the Journal of Alcoholism and Drug Addiction.
