The DSM-5 criteria are outlined for use by psychiatrists, psychologists, doctors, and other medical and mental health specialists as a standard by which to diagnose various mental health disorders, including substance use disorders.

Substance use disorders are diagnosed by medical or mental health professionals using DSM-5 diagnostic criteria after thorough patient assessment. Such diagnoses are made based on an individual meeting 2 or more criteria within a 12-month period.
