About South Dakota

South Dakota is located in the Midwestern region of the United States, with a population of approximately 900,000 people.1 It is known for its vast open spaces, including the Badlands National Park, the Black Hills, and the Missouri River. South Dakota is also home to Mount Rushmore, a national monument featuring the carved faces of four U.S. presidents.

The state has a rich history and culture, with many Native American tribes residing in the area for thousands of years before European settlers arrived. Today, South Dakota is known for its agricultural industry, producing crops such as wheat, corn, and soybeans. The state also has a significant tourism industry, drawing visitors to its natural beauty, historic landmarks, and cultural events, including the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

Addiction in South Dakota

South Dakota, like states across the country, has struggled with addiction, particularly with alcohol abuse, for many years. The state has a high rate of binge drinking, which is drinking excessive amounts of alcohol in a short period of time. According to the South Dakota Department of Social Services, a larger proportion of adults in South Dakota preferred alcohol, including binge drinking, over using illegal drugs. In 2020, 18.5% of the population in the state admitted to binge drinking at least once in the past month, which is higher than the national average of 16.4%.2

Between 2017 and 2019, South Dakota had an annual average of 2.5%, or 18,000 individuals, who suffered from past-year illicit drug use disorder. This rate was slightly below the national average of 2.9%.3

In 2021, 105 deaths were attributed to drug overdose. This translates to roughly 12.6 deaths per 100,000 South Dakota residents.4

Addiction Treatment in South Dakota

In South Dakota, there are multiple levels of addiction treatment available to you. These levels include detoxification, inpatient, and outpatient programs. Detoxification programs help individuals safely withdraw from drugs or alcohol, while inpatient programs provide around-the-clock care in a residential setting. Outpatient programs allow individuals to receive treatment while still living at home and participating in daily activities.

Within each level of treatment, there are various therapies and specialized programs available to suit your different needs. Some of these therapies include cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and motivational interviewing. There are also specialized programs such as gender-specific treatment, LGBTQ+ programs, and programs for individuals with co-occurring mental health disorders.

If you are seeking a more luxurious experience, there are options for luxury rehabs that offer amenities such as spa treatments, gourmet meals, and private rooms. Private-funded rehabs are also available if you prefer to pay for treatment out of pocket.

How Much Does Rehab Cost?

Most insurance plans in South Dakota will cover at least some portion of addiction treatment. This means that you should be able to use your insurance to pay for some or all of your treatment costs. However, it is important to note that coverage may vary depending on your specific insurance plan; therefore, you should contact your insurance provider to determine exactly how treatment will be covered.

If you are currently uninsured, there is also the option of seeking treatment at a state-funded treatment center. These centers provide addiction treatment services to individuals who are without insurance or unable to afford private treatment. State-funded treatment centers may have limited resources and longer wait times, but they can be a valuable resource if you are in need of treatment and have limited financial means.

Length of Stay in Rehab

In South Dakota, addiction treatment programs offer a range of options for the duration of treatment, including 30-day, 60-day, and 90-day programs. These programs provide intensive treatment and support as you work towards recovery.

If you require more extensive treatment, long-term rehab may be the best option. These programs typically last between 6 months to 2 years and are designed to provide comprehensive support for individuals with severe addiction or co-occurring mental health disorders. The duration of treatment will depend on your specific treatment needs and the facility or program you are enrolled in.

Recovery Starts Today

It is crucial to find addiction treatment that is tailored to your specific needs, as this can greatly increase your chances of achieving lifelong recovery. With the range of options available in South Dakota, it is possible to find a treatment program that fits your individual needs, preferences, and budget. By taking the time to research and explore different treatment options, you can find the support and resources you need to overcome addiction and build a healthy and fulfilling life in recovery.
