My 21 year old daughter spent 60 days at Hazelden in late 2018. She was/is a heroin addict, and had been in six, 30-day rehab programs and lived at 3 different sober living facilities before Hazelden. We were out of ideas, and my daughter was literally about to die, when I found Hazelden's website while desperately searching the internet from my home in AZ. Literally less than 24 hours later, my daughter was on a plane to MN. The facility picked her up at the airport, and she spend 60 days there before moving to sober living (where she still lives). She is approaching a year of sobriety, which is a miracle. A few thoughts. First, it's hard to say whether Hazelden offers better treatment than other facilities, but 1) the interaction between mental health issues and addiction is a big part of the program, and in my daughter's case, a critical part of the process, 2) my daughter spent 60 days there, which is twice as long as she spent in prior treatment centers. In retrospect, the 30-day programs were way too short and had no chance of success,, and 3) the parental program Hazelden offers is extremely valuable. I wasn't expecting much, but the 4 or 5 days I spent at the facility changed my perspective, which in turn improved my relationship with my daughter and my ability to establish boundaries for myself. I thought I understood, and could "manage", her addition. I was wrong. My daughter obviously isn't out of the woods--she'll always be an addict and have to live her life accordingly--but the past 10 months have been the most peaceful and best 10 months of the last 5 years. I feel I have my daughter back. Maybe it was Hazelden, maybe she was just finally ready, from a maturity standpoint, to change her life, or maybe it was moving her out of AZ, and away from her addict friends and dealers. It was probably all three, but the proof is in the pudding: Hazelden succeeded where other treatment centers failed, and in an environment where parents are desperate, and at great risk of being taken advantage of by facilities claiming to be better and different, perhaps hearing from a parent who ran the gamut, and saw success at Hazelden he didn't see anywhere else, will help you.
It really shouldn't cost that much. They also should offer more holistic options.
