Those who have been engaging in dangerous behaviors are at risk for a continued cycle of abuse. In traditional treatment programs, medications are often used to control the symptoms of drug withdrawal. Some of these medications have addictive properties themselves, and this can lead to transference of the addiction in someone who has an addictive personality.

Holistic programs do not rely upon traditional medical methods for drug addiction recovery. Instead, vitamins and various therapies can act as treatments to counteract addiction. The goal is to relieve withdrawal symptoms in natural ways, which can also introduce a sustainable lifestyle following the program. Many programs combine aspects of a holistic and traditional approach into their offerings.
