Treatment Philosophy
Awakenings by the Sea’s vision is to provide alcoholic and/or drug-addicted women and their families an opportunity to choose a healthier way of life at an affordable rehab. The untreated alcoholic or addict may suffer physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual maladies; the impact that the alcoholic or addict has on those around them can be equally devastating. Awakenings by the Sea’s alcohol and drug treatment center in Oregon believes that alcoholism and drug addiction are primary illnesses, which are chronic and progressive and that, without proper treatment, are ultimately fatal. Although there is no cure for the disease of addiction, recovery will occur by following a carefully structured recovery program that requires self-honesty, a willingness to change and the belief that a continuing support system, which may include other 12-Step recovering people, is essential. The cornerstone of this recovery program is total abstinence from any mood-altering substances. This is followed by education and application of the concepts outlined in 12-Step programs of recovery. Using this foundation and other therapeutic methods, we believe that our treatment program can provide knowledge, a supportive environment and the basic tools necessary for our clients to begin their journey into recovery.

John Volken Academy - Seattle

The website says it all – ‘You become who you were meant to be.’ We had lost our son, Eric, to addiction. He hadn’t passed away, but was certainly in danger of it. He had become a stranger to us – an imposter in our beautiful son’s body. He struggled with extreme opiate addiction – and really whatever mind altering substances he could get his hands on – for over a decade!! He bounced in and out of jail and homelessness. It was gut-wrenching and heartbreaking! He tried a number of other traditional drug rehab facilities ‘graduating’ from some 30-40 day programs and dropping out or being kicked out of others. When we heard about JVA, we begged him to go. Initially, he was adamant that there was ‘no way in hell’ that he needed or would ever attend a 2-year program. After continued failed attempts trying other methods/programs, he applied and was accepted to JVA. He initially committed to going for 6 months. After 6 months there, he told us that he had decided that he was going to stay the whole time and promised to graduate the program. He said that he saw changes in people more advanced in the program than himself who had qualities he admired and looked up to – and wanted the same for himself. He put in the hard work – making the most of his time there - ceasing the opportunity to learn, grow and better his life and that of others. He graduates at the end of this month and has a bright future ahead of him if he stays on track (and we are optimistic he will) – with employment lined up, and the tools and resources necessary to not only navigate and survive – but to thrive!! Thank you, John and Chawna Volken, for your vision, generosity and wisdom in creating this program- and for making it affordable to all! We have our son back – the man, family member and person he was always meant to be. We are eternally grateful!

My husband\'s drinking was destroying him, our marriage, and family. We live in Florida, but his parents lived in Washington. We planned an intervention and he was admitted to Milam Recovery in Kirkland. He is 10 years sober this month. First of all this is not a resort or spa. This is a rehab facility people. They are not there to kiss your behind, but to save it. The counselors, are not \"mean\" they are direct and firm. Alcoholics and addicts need structure, discipline, and someone to get real with them. They are not going to baby you. If you are there it\'s because you need to be there. No, the food isn\'t the best, but again your not there for the food. The family group sessions were I felt very helpful. I recommend you take them. No, your not allowed to have electronics, because your there to get well, not update your Twitter, and Facebook account. This is a distraction from your treatment. No, there is no sugar or caffeine. The lack of these help your body detox. Yes, they will search your bags when you go in. Almost half of the people my husband was with tried to smuggle drugs or alcohol in. Imagine that, addicts smuggling contraband in. This is for your own good. Yes, you have to attend AA meetings daily. to reinforce your treatment/counseling. Yes, you are asked to attend after care meetings. Again, these are to help you, when your out on your own. In my opinion most to the negative reviews are people whining because staff are mean, they had to follow the rules, the food was not 5 star quality, their beds were not comfy, People get real. I\'ll admit the place could use an update, it is a little dated and dark, (at least when he was there) however your there for treatment for addiction. My husband has kept in touch with several of the people he was in with most of them are still sober or clean. So I think that is what speaks volumes, in my opinion. From my own personal experience Milam saved his life and that was all I cared about.
