The life of our grandson was saved by the John Volken Academy. He worked hard to complete his application, and all of us in the family were so thankful when he was accepted to the long-term treatment that is offered there. We could never have afforded such lasting care and education and work experience and watchful guidance as he has gotten from any other facility anywhere! He has been there for two years now, and is working toward graduation.. Thank you, John Volken. Thank you, Academy staff. Thank you, God, for helping us find JVA.
Residence XII provides a solid foundation to begin a life in recovery and excels at addressing issues unique to women with addictions. But regardless of what Residence XII promotes, they are not a dual diagnosis treatment center. They try but fail and this is crucial because misdiagnosed and unmanaged mental health issues lead to relapse. After Residence XII, I stayed sober for 15 years and continued to be involved in the organization. But when I relapsed, I looked elsewhere. I didn’t want another crash course in 12 Step work, meditation or basic life skills classes. Although helpful and necessary, these tools are not an adequate substitute for a psychiatric assessment conducted by a qualified psychiatrist, a comprehensive treatment plan, individualized counseling and access to effective non-addicting psychiatric medications. I am sober today because I was able to get this type of treatment and more importantly, I am happy. There appears to be a unspoken code among Residence XII Alum that any critique of the organization is a reflection of the person or the quality of their sobriety; only disgruntled people complain. Let me be clear, I am not unhappy with the treatment I received there. I only think it could be better and not saying so prevents the program from improving. Residence XII introduces fundamental tools critical to maintaining sobriety in a safe, structured, environment. It is a perfectly adequate rehab that is appropriate for most people. However, if you have been diagnosed with a mental illness there are better facilities.
